What is Yellow Brick?

Yellow Brick is a non-profit artistic polyphonic workspace that fosters relations among local and international artists, art collectives, curators, writers, thinkers, and makers within the Athenian context, predominantly accessed and introduced through the area of Nea Ionia. It began its activities in 2016 and has so far hosted more than seventy three artists working in diverse media and with different geographical and cultural backgrounds. It has held more than forty public events, including exhibitions, performances, and workshops.

Yellow Brick also runs the publishing project Yellow Books and maintains and experimental archive and educational tool, the Library of Objects, where remains of works or materials used by previous residents can be reused and transformed according to the creative processes of the inhabitants of the space. At the end of the residency, Yellow Brick invites each artist to contribute a small trace of their experience—a poster, text, zine, etc.,—to the Library of Objects.

Each residency period is understood as a STEP towards new ways of cohabitation and collaboration. The studio/exhibition space will be shared with Yellow Brick’s founder Vasiliki Sifostratoudaki, and its use will be coordinated depending on the specific needs of the residency artist in conversation with Sifostratoudaki. The space may need to be reconfigured at various times for events and workshops during the period of your stay.

As the comfort of the guest artist is always a priority, Yellow Brick’s opening hours are decided collectively and announced on our website, social media, and press for all related events.

Where is the space situated?

Nea Ionia is a neighbourhood in the suburbs of Athens with a long tradition of small industries working mainly in textile, typography, and music, and home to a plethora of craftspeople who have operated in the area since its establishment by immigrants from Asia Minor. It is also marked by the remains of intense mineral exploitation that occurred in the area until recently. Nowadays Nea Ionia is a hospitable neighbourhood for immigrants from different cultural backgrounds, constituting a field of diverse possibilities. Yellow Brick is located near Nea Filadelfeia park, in between the Nea Ionia and Pefkakia metro stations. It is a 5–7 minute walk to these stations and a 15 minute journey to the centre of Athens by metro. The local market and stores are a 2 minute walk away, and there are many small cafes and restaurants nearby.
